If Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney were to run for president as an independent candidate in 2024, she would help to elect Donald Trump, according to a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll.
Cheney, who lost to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman in last week’s Wyoming GOP primary, told NBC News’ Today Show that she is considering running for president in 2024 with the hopes of preventing President Trump from returning to the White House.
Cheney said, “that’s a decision that I’m going to make in the coming months, and I’m not going to make any announcements here this morning— but it is something that I am thinking about.”
Following her Wyoming primary defeat, Cheney said, “I have said since January 6, that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office.” She then added: “This primary election is over but
now the real work begins.”
However, if defeating Trump is her goal, then Cheney might want to take the recent findings from the Yahoo News/YouGov poll into consideration when making her 2024 decision.
Because according to the poll, Cheney would siphon votes away from Joe Biden in a hypothetical three-way race between Trump, Biden, and Cheney, ensuring Trump a victory.
If Cheney ran as an independent, she would earn 32 percent of voters who identified themselves as independents, with only 18 percent of independent voters responding by saying that they would vote for Biden.
According to the poll, Trump earns 37 percent support, Joe Biden earns 29 percent support, and Liz Cheney earns only 11 percent.
Cheney also remains widely unpopular. According to the poll, only 34 percent view her favorably, while 38 percent view her unfavorably, presenting another obstacle for Cheney to overcome if she wants to defeat President Trump.
