Justice prevailed Wednesday as a jury found Stephan Cannon, 26, guilty of murdering 77-year-old retired St. Louis Police Capt. David Dorn during the 2020 riots sparked by George Floyd’s death.

According to Fox News, Cannon was charged with felonies of first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, three counts of armed criminal action, and stealing over $750.

The Daily Wire reported that a Missouri jury decided Cannon was guilty on all charges after three days of trial.

During closing statements on Wednesday, prosecutor Marvin Teer said Cannon killed “a good man who dedicated his entire life to doing nothing but helping others.”

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, shared his thoughts on the conviction, tweeting, “Somberly, I am pleased to see justice being served following the murder of former St. Louis police Captain David Dorn. Officer Dorn bravely protected his friend’s business during the 2020 riots. I pray this verdict brings closure to the Dorn family.”

According to the New York Post, the retired police officer was attempting to deter looters near a friend’s pawn shop when Cannon fired 10 shots at Dorn and killed him.

Paul Mauro, an attorney and former inspector for NYPD, explained that while the jury’s verdict has served justice, the tragic event should never have been made possible. “I’m very glad that justice was served for Capt. Dorn.” he said. “But make no mistake – the conditions that allowed his killing should never have occurred.”

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said, “God Bless David Dorn and his family. We’ll always #BackTheBlue.”

Cannon will be sentenced on Sept. 13. Based on the charges against him, Fox News reported he could face life in prison without parole.
