Joe Pinion calls on Schumer to reopen an investigation into New York nursing home deaths

U.S. Senate candidate Joe Pinion called on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to petition the Department of Justice (DOJ) to reopen its investigation into New York’s nursing home Covid-related deaths.

The plea comes after a new report by the New York State Comptroller revealed damning information.

The report alleges that Health Department officials in the state undercounted the death toll of nursing home deaths by roughly 50 percent, stirring speculation whether former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his administration deliberately covered up the actual number of deaths.

“The Governor of the State of New York lied, far too many grandparents died, and the power of government covered up that horrifying truth to preserve a political narrative,” Pinion said in a press release Wednesday. “Our priority now must be to uncover what our elected officials knew, when they knew it, and how it is possible that such a deadly and disturbing truth was concealed from the public for so long.”

Pinion voiced that the audit confirms the investigation should never have been closed. Schumer’s “silence here is deafening,” his challenger said.

Last July, the DOJ received massive backlash after announcing they would not investigate the nursing home crisis in multiple Democrat-run states, including New York.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., condemned the DOJ’s decision as “Absolutely shameful” on Twitter.

Likewise, Gov. Ron DeSantis criticized the media’s hypocritical positive coverage of Cuomo’s detrimental Covid-19 policies while weaponizing Covid against President Trump and the governor’s successful Covid policies.

Florida “prohibited hospitals from discharging a sick nursing home patient back into nursing homes. Because we understood the hazard that that would have. Obviously, New York and other states made different decisions,” DeSantis said.
Pinion is on the road to oust Schumer from Washington after receiving the Republican nomination this year. Pinion made history as the first black candidate to be nominated as a Republican for the U.S. Senate.
