A new report released by the Associated Press on Monday revealed that over one million voters switched to the Republican Party in the past year alone.

Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, commented on the news on Twitter, stating, “More than 1 million voters switch to GOP in warning for Democrats.” He added, “Republicans boosted their share of party changers in 168 of 235 suburban counties AP examined.”

According to the data shared by the Associated Press, of the 1.7 million voters who changed their party affiliation in the past year, only 630,000 people joined the Democrat Party, while over one million voters joined the Republican Party.

Abbott explained that Republican gains “included suburban counties in Texas.” He also stated that they had also “seen gains in South Texas.”

Recently, Republican congressional candidate, Mayra Flores, flipped South Texas’s 34th Congressional District. This represented a major shift in party affiliation, particularly in a district that is 84 percent Hispanic that voted overwhelmingly for Biden in 2020, and it could represent a larger shift in the November midterm elections.

According to the Associated Press, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel attributed the recent phenomenon of voters switching to the Republican Party to the Democrats’ “out of touch” policies. “Biden and Democrats are woefully out of touch with the American people, and that’s why voters are flocking to the Republican Party in droves,” she said.

Republicans have been building momentum over the past year in hopes of retaking the majority in both the House and the Senate, while the Democrat Party struggles to maintain voter support in the face of rising gas prices, food shortages, rising crime, the southern border crisis, and other pressing issues.

Last November, President Donald Trump predicted, “If we do our jobs, and if we stick together, then exactly one year from today, we are going to be watching a massive red wave sweep across this county, and we are going to be celebrating the election of the largest House Republican majority in American history.”
