Nearly 60 percent of New Yorkers want Republican Rep. George Santos to resign following allegations that Santos lied about his resume when running to serve New York’s 3rd district in Congress.
The poll, released this week by Sienna, found that even 49 percent of Republicans believe he should resign.
Fox News reported, “the poll found that 59% of the state’s voters said he should resign, while just 20% said he should stay in Congress. Among Republicans, 49% said he should resign, while just 26% said he should not.”
Santos continues to face calls for his resignation as more details about his past dubious claims about his work and educational background come to light.
On Monday, a newly unearthed podcast interview surfaced of Santos claiming to have survived an assassination attempt and a mugging on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
The New York Post reported, “the notorious fabulist made a series of wild allegations during a virtual sit-down with a Brazilian podcast in December, which was translated from Portuguese by MSNBC’s ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ and aired on Monday.”
During the podcast, Santos said, “We have already suffered an attempt on my life, an assassination attempt, a threatening letter, having to have the police, a police escort standing in front of our house.”
The latest questionable statement by Santos is just one in a long line of claims that strain credulity. Santos has admitted to embellishing parts of his resume.
Congressman Santos has previously claimed that he graduated from Baruch College and New York University—a claim that both colleges deny. He has also stated that he is Jewish, even though he has also previously professed to also be a devout Catholic.
He has said that he lost four employees at the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, in 2016 despite a New York Times report that contends that none of the 49 victims appear to have worked for any of the firms listed in Santos’s biography.
Santos also made the shocking pronouncement that his mother survived the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, even though immigration records obtained by multiple news outlets show that she was not in the U.S. at the time of the terrorist attacks.
When running for Congress, the embattled congressman listed Citigroup and Goldman Sachs as past employers on his resume, which both banks denied when speaking with NBC New York.
Because of these disputed claims, and several others like them, The Nassau County GOP— the county Santos represents in Congress— has called for Santos to resign.
In a statement, Nassau County GOP Chairman Joe Cairo said, “he has no place on the Nassau County Republican committee, nor should he serve in public service, nor as an elected official. He’s not welcome here at GOP HQ.”
