On Monday, President Donald Trump showed his support for Rep. Madison Cawthorn, R-N.C., by urging voters to give him a “second chance.”

The 45th president stated in a post on Truth Social, “When Madison was first elected to Congress, he did a great job. Recently, he made some foolish mistakes, which I don’t believe he’ll make again…let’s give Madison a second chance!”

In early May, Rep. Cawthorn became the subject of conversation following the release of a leaked video that appears to show the young congressman engaging in lewd activities with another person.

According to a report from CNBC, the video was leaked by an organization called American Muckrakers, a political action committee that seems intent on attacking the young lawmaker. Their website, firemadison.com, states, “Madison Cawthorn presents a clear and present danger to American democracy. Stopping him is critical.”

However, Cawthorn wasted no time in responding to the video, which he called “blackmail.” In an official statement posted to his Twitter account, Cawthorn confirmed the authenticity of the video but did not dodge his responsibility in making it.

“A new hit against me just dropped,” Cawthorn said. “Years ago, in this video, I was being crass with a friend, trying to be funny. We were acting foolish, and joking. That’s it. I’m NOT backing down. I told you there would be a drip drip campaign. Blackmail won’t win. We will.”

Many conservatives have been speculating if Trump would again lend his support to Cawthorn in the wake of the leaked video, and on Monday, they got their answer.

Trump touted Madison’s ability to overcome adversity in his own statement on Truth Social: “At 18 years of age, Madison Cawthorn, the now the 26 year old Congressman from the Great State of North Carolina, went through a life changing event the likes of which, fortunately, few people will have to endure. In just seconds he lost the use of the lower half of his body, a traumatic experience to say the least.”

Cawthorn reiterated his willingness to fight for reelection in 2022. “I’m ready to keep fighting for you,” he tweeted. “I wanted you to know the truth, straight from me. Don’t lose hope, don’t listen to the fake news.”
