Part of President Trump’s initial allure to his base of supporters was his willingness to say things that many were otherwise too scared to say. The first digital vessel that the president used as a proxy to voice his opinions was the social media platform Twitter.
The father of the MAGA movement joined Twitter in May 2009 and instantly began building a reputation for his blunt outspokenness. When Trump announced his candidacy in 2016, he cultivated a page renowned for his frank and comical insults of those he opposed, which caught the mainstream media completely off-guard.
However, Twitter decided to ban President Trump over what they deemed “incitement of violence” following the riot on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6, 2021.
Following the takeover of Twitter by newly christened CEO Elon Musk, Musk held a Twitter poll to decide whether or not the people would like to see Trump’s reinstatement to the app, which he won by notable margins.
