Nearly three years after Andrew Cuomo resigned as the Governor of New York amid calls for his arrest, he is slated to publicly testify before Congress regarding his controversial COVID-19 nursing home policies.
The House Oversight Committee issued a press release detailing that Cuomo’s hearing will take place on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. It noted that he will be questioned regarding his “unscientific guidance that forced New York nursing homes and long-term care facilities to admit COVID-19 positive patients.”
Chairman Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, stated in the press release, “Andrew Cuomo owes answers to the 15,000 families who lost loved ones in New York’s nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. On September 10, Americans will have the opportunity to hear directly from the former governor about New York’s potentially fatal nursing home policies.”
He added, “During closed-door testimony, Mr. Cuomo was shockingly callous when pressed to explain discrepancies in nursing home death counts, repeatedly deflected responsibility for the nursing home directive, and most egregiously, showed little remorse for the thousands of lives lost. A true leader owns up to his mistakes and takes responsibility for wrongdoing. That is not what we saw from Mr. Cuomo during his term as governor nor during his transcribed interview. We hope that during his public hearing next week, Mr. Cuomo will stop dodging accountability and honestly answer the American people.”
The New York Post reported that Cuomo testified privately in June with Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, R-Iowa, stating that he deflected from his role in the nursing home deaths and did not show much remorse.
“There needs to be accountability,” she said.
In Feb. of 2021, 9,000 recovering COVID-19 patients were sent into nursing homes, per The Associated Press. By August 2021, even The New York Times reported on growing concerns that Cuomo downplayed the number of deaths associated with his COVID-19 policies.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., called for his arrest, sparking others to agree.
In May 2023, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing investigating the deadly nursing home mandates and published their findings in a press release.
The hearing revealed that Senior Fellow for Health Policy at the Empire Center of New York, Mr. Bill Hammond, “testified that former Governor Cuomo covered-up his failed policy mistakes through a series of manipulative events.”
