Joe Biden relied on the vote of suburban Americans in the 2020 elections. According to the Brookings Institution, the suburbs won it for Biden in 2020 and could become the Democrats’ “backbone” in the future.
Not so fast! According to Spencer Kimball, the Emerson College executive director, the suburbs no longer favor Biden.
As a matter of fact, according to a recent poll from the college, former President Trump has a nearly 12-point favorability advantage over Biden. He also leads Biden 45 percent to 42 percent in a hypothetical 2024 election. The poll also found that Trump leads Biden among suburban voters 47 percent to 38 percent, and rural voters 59 percent to 35 percent. Biden, on the other hand, leads among urban and city voters.
After the 2020 election, Democrats had high hopes that support in the suburbs would allow them to be more competitive in some of the Democrats’ “weaker” areas. These aspirations were laid out in a Brookings Report, which noted:
“In many ways, the 2020 election could represent a breakthrough for Democrats in the sense that the suburbs — along with continued urban core support — could make them competitive both in familiar ‘blue wall’ states as well as yet-to-be-conquered Sun Belt states.”
Based on the Emerson College poll results, Democrats might want to reconsider and reevaluate their optimism when it comes to the suburban vote.
While Biden allegedly carried the suburban vote in 2020, the tide appears to be shifting. A downward trend in support for Biden is entirely understandable given the high inflation rate, record-high prices for gas and other essential items, supply chain shortages, increased crime, lower wages (resulting from high inflation and higher costs), a less secure America, and domestic and international turmoil.
These problems (among others) are serious and define Biden’s first term. They also explain why many who initially supported Biden are no longer willing to do so.
