A House resolution to withdraw the United States from the World Trade Organization (WTO) is gaining steam amid growing tensions with Chinese membership.
Last month, the Trump administration paused funding for the WTO, per Reuters.
On Tuesday, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., joined the effort to combat unfair trade practices by co-sponsoring a House Resolution to end the U.S. WTO agreement.
He posted about this move on X, stating, “Canada and Mexico sued the US to force removal of country of origin labels on beef and pork. Congress removed labels in the face of a WTO ruling. Consumers and farmers lost out.”
The legislation, H.J.Res.93, was introduced earlier this month by Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis. Tiffany has been a strong defender in the fight to put America First.
He recently noted the importance of withdrawing from the WTO during an interview on Fox Business.
Tiffany explained that U.S. WTO membership is renewed every five years and is due for renewal this year, giving Congress the ability to withdraw. He stated, “It’s time to find out if members of Congress stand with America.”
“We’ve seen our manufacturing and farmers suffer over the last 20 years as a result of these trade agreements that have been struck. And China just steals our intellectual property, they use forced labor,” he added.
Tiffany emphasized the importance of voting on the issue in Congress to hold representatives accountable for a single question: “Who do you stand with, the American people or the World Trade Organization?”
