President Donald Trump warned Sunday that federal court rulings against his administration’s tariffs could lead to the “economic ruination” of the United States.
The U.S. Court of International Trade ruled Wednesday that the administration overstepped its authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by imposing broad tariffs without congressional approval.
“If the Courts somehow rule against us on Tariffs, which is not expected, that would allow other Countries to hold our Nation hostage with their anti-American Tariffs that they would use against us. This would mean the Economic ruination of the United States of America!” he wrote.
The administration has until late Monday to file a response to the court’s ruling. Officials have indicated plans to appeal the decision, potentially taking the case to the Supreme Court.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed the administration’s commitment to maintaining the tariffs, stating that alternative legal avenues would be pursued to continue the trade measures.
“We’re going to take that up to higher courts, the president’s going to win like he always does. But rest assured, tariffs are not going away,” Lutnick said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”
“He has so many other authorities, that even in the weird and unusual circumstance where this was taken away, we just bring on another or another or another,” he continued.
The case is part of an ongoing series of efforts aimed at improving the U.S. economy through tariffs on foreign goods. Trump also recently delayed a 50 percent tariff on the European Union to provide time for negotiations.
“I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to do so,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The Commission President said that talks will begin rapidly. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
While EU officials have expressed optimism about renewed talks, the future remains uncertain. Trump’s administration has clarified that the goal is to secure a comprehensive agreement addressing structural trade imbalances rather than only temporary concessions.
EU President Ursula von der Leyen shared an update to X following the recent call with Trump.
“Good call with @POTUS. The EU and US share the world’s most consequential and close trade relationship. Europe is ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively. To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9,” she wrote.
