Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis called a special session of the state’s legislature to prepare details to implement President Donald Trump’s upcoming deportation program.
DeSantis announced the session on Monday ahead of Trump’s inauguration next week, stating there is “no time to waste.”
“Today, I called for a special session of the Florida legislature the week of January 27 to prepare Florida to lead on the Trump Administration’s deportation program. We will allocate resources and ensure state and local officials in Florida are supporting these efforts,” he wrote. “We have no time to waste. Florida must lead.”
DeSantis also called for accountability for any officials who violate the state’s anti-sanctuary policies, indicating potential firings or other punishments for those opposing the state’s immigration laws.
“There also needs to be measures to hold people accountable who are violating our anti-sanctuary policies, and then Florida needs to make sure that we don’t have any lingering incentives for people to come into our state illegally,” DeSantis said.
“So therefore I’m going to call the legislature into special session starting the week of January 27 we have the next president taking office January 20,” he continued. “We’re going to have some time to process to make sure we’re doing what we need to do. but then we need to act and we need to act quickly.”
Trump announced that Tom Homan will serve as the border leader of his mass deportation efforts just days after his election victory. Homan previously served as the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Trump’s first term.
“I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders (‘The Border Czar’), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Congratulations to Tom. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long awaited for, job,” he continued.
