On Tuesday, U.S. House Representatives Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., and Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., unveiled a resolution stating that President Trump “did not engage in insurrection or engage in rebellion against the United States.”
It is worth noting that the one-page resolution is one page in length and has over 60 Republican co-sponsors.
Meanwhile, there are calls by some groups across the United States for Trump to be disqualified from appearing on the ballot for 2024. Groups pointed to the 14th Amendment’s barring candidates from holding office if they were involved in an insurrection as grounds for Trump to be disqualified from the ballot.
Rep. Gaetz said in a press conference aired on RSBN, “We are here today to authoritatively express that President Trump did NOT commit an insurrection and we believe that Congress has a unique role in making that declaration.”
Gaetz added, “It’s not the job of the states and especially not the job of some bureaucrats in Colorado to make this assessment.”
Meanwhile, Rep. Stefanik argued that “as President Donald Trump continues to dominate in the polls, extreme Democrats will stop at nothing in [an] attempt to prevent President Donald Trump from returning to the White House.”
The resolution, which remains nonbinding, would authoritatively state that “the sense of the House of Representatives” stands that Donald Trump “did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or give aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”
Gaetz has not received solid assurances from House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., that the resolution will be brought to the House Floor for a formal vote. However, Johnson does appear to have a close relationship with President Trump.
