“One of America’s great Bible teachers, Pastor @JohnMacArthur, stepped into the presence of Almighty God Monday evening at the age of 86. He could get more out of a Bible verse than anyone I’ve ever known. His voice will be greatly missed,” wrote Franklin Graham on X.

John MacArthur was a staunch defender of the Christian faith. MacArthur, who served as the pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, was a leading voice for Christians over the past five decades.

In addition to serving at Grace Community Church, he founded The Master’s Seminary, The Master’s University, and Grace to You ministries. A prolific author, teacher, and preacher, he regularly attended conferences, joining the likes of John Piper, Kevin DeYoung, the late R.C. Sproul, and many other leading Evangelical teachers. His teachings impacted the world, undeniably in the same manner as some of the leading Reformers.

He never sought the spotlight. However, when California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, ordered churches to shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, MacArthur made headlines by refusing to close Grace Church’s doors. He did not back down and was willing to be arrested. He believed, and rightly so, that Christ is the head of the Church, not the state. The church sued and won, setting an example for churches across America that the Constitution remains a vital force.

MacArthur rejected the social justice movement and warned of its growing influence in the Church. He taught that Christians of every race and background are equal in Christ, and viewed modern attacks on Christianity as both dangerous and heretical.

Known as a passionate, educated, and at times fiery preacher, MacArthur was a staunch Calvinist, adhering to the doctrines of God’s sovereignty and providence. His teachings reached millions of souls and helped others understand the attributes of God. From his written commentaries on the New Testament to his study Bible, he was best known for conveying the message of grace, always teaching that salvation was by faith alone.

Willing to stand up for the faith, MacArthur was a regular guest on Larry King’s nightly show and frequently called attention to the dangers of the social gospel, prosperity gospel, and the dilution of biblical truth. He never softened the message to gain followers. He proclaimed Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and kingship.

MacArthur remained careful not to align closely with politics throughout his ministry, always teaching that the political leaders of America needed to resemble that of a fruitful servant. He believed America needed men of integrity in office, leaders who resembled humble, godly servants, not self-serving opportunists. He supported Israel and viewed their role in end-times matters as crucial for the Second Coming of Christ.

Like the passing of D. James Kennedy or R.C. Sproul, the world lost a great teacher who entered glory with Christ.

May future generations aspire to impact and reach souls with the same sentiment and passion as MacArthur did. His teachings will continue to affect countless souls across the globe.
