On Wednesday, Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson shared his support for President Trump’s monumental visit to China. Speaking at a news conference in Washington, D.C., Johnson discussed the importance of the trip, the possibility of improving relations between the two countries and the pursuit of American economic strength.
“The president has laid down a marker that was overdue and very important: The American people are not going to be taken advantage of any more by adversaries or allies,” Speaker Johnson said. “He’s demonstrated that resolve and that principle day after day. He’s negotiated much better trade agreements and more fair policies for us.”
President Trump arrived in China on Wednesday morning for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss future relations between the U.S. and China. Trump was accompanied by several American CEOs and tech leaders, including Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Larry Fink and David Solomon. Trump previously stated he would ask President Xi to open China to allow business and tech leaders to “work their magic” and drive technological advancement in the country.
The meeting between President Trump and President Xi was originally set for April, but was rescheduled amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, welcomed President Trump and emphasized the opportunity for the two world leaders to address issues between the two countries, including working towards global peace and development.
Speaker Johnson addressed President Trump’s overall policy objectives going into the meeting. “When he says America First, he doesn’t mean America alone, obviously. He means that we put the interests of America first.” Speaker Johnson said. “That’s not a selfish proposition. When we do that it’s good for our citizens. It’s good for this country and every freedom-loving person around the world. So, our prayers are with him and he has a good visit with Xi in China and they come forward with some favorable policies and things that will help us out, and I believe he will.”
