Former Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake is reportedly under consideration as President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Mexico.
The New York Post and Semafor first reported the news that Lake, 55, could be selected for the key role as part of Trump’s border crackdown.
“Kari Lake is a leading contender for the nomination as Donald Trump’s ambassador to Mexico, two people familiar with the situation told Semafor,” the outlet reported.
“Lake won Trump’s endorsement in both her unsuccessful bids for statewide office in Arizona. The former news anchor and vocal proponent of stringent border security lost an Arizona Senate bid last month to Democratic Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego,” it added.
The Post noted that Trump’s transition team did not confirm or deny that Lake was being considered for the post. Lake has also not spoken about the potential position.
Lake has been a controversial figure in the America First movement in recent years. Formerly a news anchor for Phoenix Fox affiliate KSAV-TV, she lost a close battle for governor against Democrat Katie Hobbs, though she refused to concede the race.
She followed the loss with her 2024 run for the Senate. Lake won the primary but lost in the general election despite Trump winning Arizona’s electoral votes.
In her run for governor, she published an op-ed outlining a proposal to create a group of states to deport illegal immigrants similar to Trump’s mass deportation plans.
“This compact will establish an interstate commission overseeing joint border security operations comprised of law enforcement resources from member states,” Lake wrote at the time in the Independent Journal Review.
“The compact will provide for states to not only arrest illegal immigrants crossing into Arizona, but also to return them back across the border,” she added. “We will keep Washington informed of our efforts, but Arizona will not seek permission to defend ourselves. In our federalist system, states are sovereign and we will exercise our inherent powers to resolve this crisis.”
