Rep. Nancy Pelosi and her husband, Paul Pelosi, have issued a statement after authorities recommended a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge following a crash in California’s Napa County.
“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle,” a spokesperson for the Pelosis said in a statement to The California Post.
“Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter.”
Paul Pelosi, 86, faces a recommended misdemeanor hit-and-run charge stemming from Friday’s crash in Yountville.
According to the Napa County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 6700 block of Yount Street at about 2:30 p.m. after a witness reported seeing a northbound vehicle strike the rear of a parked car on the shoulder of the road.
Authorities said the collision caused significant damage and pushed the parked vehicle’s right tire onto the curb. A witness told 911 dispatchers the driver briefly stopped before leaving the scene.
Investigators later located Pelosi on Yountville Cross Road, where his brown convertible had become disabled and was partially blocking the roadway. Officials said the vehicle sustained significant damage to its front right side.
After speaking with deputies, Pelosi acknowledged that he had struck something but said he did not know what it was. He continued driving until his damaged vehicle became inoperable, authorities said.
Sheriff’s officials said alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Pelosi submitted to a preliminary alcohol screening test that registered a blood alcohol concentration of 0.00, ruling out driving under the influence.
Pelosi was not taken into custody at the scene, with the sheriff’s office saying that is standard procedure for misdemeanor offenses.
The case has been forwarded to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for review. Authorities are also submitting a Department of Motor Vehicles re-evaluation referral, which officials described as a routine step involving elderly drivers.
A spokesperson for the Napa County Sheriff’s Office said investigators are recommending a misdemeanor charge of property-damage hit-and-run without bodily injury.
The incident comes about two years after Pelosi pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge stemming from a 2022 crash in Napa County. In that case, authorities said his blood alcohol concentration measured 0.082%, and he later pleaded guilty to driving under the influence causing injury.
