President Donald Trump’s championed “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed the U.S. Senate on Tuesday in a narrow vote of 51-50, thanks to a tiebreaker vote from Vice President J.D. Vance.
The bill will now head back to the U.S. House of Representatives for approval. If passed there, it will head to President Trump’s desk to be signed on Friday, which would meet the GOP’s self-imposed deadline of July 4.
Republican Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Rand Paul (Ky.) and Thom Tillis (N.C.) voted against the bill.
President Trump was participating in a roundtable discussion at the new “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant detention facility in Ochopee, Florida, when news broke that the bill had passed.
Just before the vote, he told the media that it would be “the greatest bill ever passed,” projecting confidence that the legislation would pass the U.S. Senate.
The passage of the bill in the U.S. Senate has drawn broad applause from Trump’s allies.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. praised the legislation, writing on X, “This legislation cuts waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicaid—allowing us to deliver better care to America’s most vulnerable citizens. I look forward to the House passing this bill quickly so President Trump can sign it into law.”
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., wrote, “It delivers on President Trump’s agenda—securing the border, funding mass deportations, cutting taxes for families, strengthening our military, and unleashing American energy.”
