President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to tariff European countries “100%” if they engage in implementing a “Digital Services Tax” on American companies.
“Numerous European Countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American Companies,” the president wrote in a Truth Social statement.
He continued, “Some of these Countries are close to actually doing this. Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America.”
President Trump said that such a tariff would “supersede” trade deals that had been made with any of these countries and would immediately be applied.
According to CBS, “roughly half of all European members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development” are considering or already using a “digital services tax,” mostly impacting American companies.
The possible digital tax framework has drawn the ire of President Trump in the past. Last summer, he slammed such a proposal and vowed to protect “our incredible American Tech Companies.”
He argued, “Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology. They also, outrageously, give a complete pass to China’s largest Tech Companies. This must end, and end NOW!”
In April 2026, President Trump also discussed such a digital tax on American companies, telling reporters in the Oval Office, “We’ve been looking at it, and we can meet that very easily by just putting a big tariff on the UK. So, they’d better be careful. If they don’t drop the tax, we’ll probably put a big tariff on the UK.”
Earlier this year, President Trump set a deadline on business discussions with the EU as he seeks to get a final deal approved on tariffs with the country by July 4, CBS reported.
