President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the Department of the Interior will oversee a major reconstruction of Washington, D.C.’s historic East Potomac Golf Links, with plans to transform the public course into a championship-level venue that will host some of golf’s biggest tournaments.

In a lengthy Truth Social post following a visit to the property, the president said the course has deteriorated after years of neglect but will be rebuilt into “one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World.”

President Trump said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, Fazio’s son Gavin, and members of his staff joined him in touring the course, which sits along the Potomac River and overlooks many of the nation’s most recognizable monuments.

“It was determined that, on this fantastic site, with water and unparalleled views of D.C.’s Monuments, we will build one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World which, importantly, will also be made available to the Public,” President Trump wrote.

The president said construction is scheduled to begin Sept. 1 under the supervision of the Department of the Interior, with Tom Fazio leading the redesign.

According to the president, the renovated course will be built to championship standards while remaining open to the public. He said the facility will be capable of hosting premier events, including the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup, PGA Championship, and PGA Tour tournaments.

The president described the current course as “virtually unplayable,” citing dead grass, deteriorating greens, a failed irrigation system and trees damaged by years of neglect that he said have become safety hazards. The golf course project is part of the administration’s broader effort to restore and beautify Washington, D.C.

In the same social media post, President Trump highlighted recent renovations to monuments, statues and fountains throughout the capital, while also pointing to repairs at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following what he described as extensive vandalism.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump has been considering redeveloping East Potomac Golf Links for several months.

The course is currently operated by the nonprofit National Links Trust under a long-term lease with the National Park Service. The organization offers affordable public golf and has said it will continue managing the property until the federal government begins its planned restoration.
