President Trump announced on Wednesday that the U.S. is willing to strike back following any Iranian attacks against ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz. The critically important waterway, which facilitates the transportation of approximately one-fifth of global oil and natural gas, has been subject to Iranian attacks in recent months resulting in significant disruption to the international oil market.
In a Truth Social post, the president made clear that U.S. counterattacks would be launched against Iranian infrastructure, including in the capital city of Tehran.
“From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,” President Trump said.
His comments come as the U.S. and Iran enter into the 11th consecutive day of resumed fighting following the end of a temporary ceasefire and the breakdown of diplomatic relations. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed ongoing military action has been aimed at Iranian military targets with the goal of hindering Iran’s ability to launch attacks within the Strait of Hormuz.
According to CENTCOM, Iran has engaged in “unwarranted attacks” against 30 vessels over the past three months, which have “endangered hundreds of innocent mariners and undermined freedom of navigation.” U.S. forces have continued to provide protection for vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, facilitating the passage of 900 commercial vessels and 450 million barrels of crude oil.
On Wednesday, Sec. of State Marco Rubio warned against a policy of allowing Iran to collect tolls for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio referred to the establishment of a toll policy backed by threats of military aggression as a “dangerous precedent” that could be replicated throughout the region if it is implemented by Iran.
Iranian forces have responded with counterattacks against surrounding nations that contain U.S. military bases. On Tuesday, President Trump doubled down on the resumption of U.S. military action against Iran, stating that further negotiations between the two countries were unlikely in light of recent developments.
Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump said he was not interested in further meetings with Iranian officials.
“Until they’re ready to meet in a meaningful way, we have no interest in meeting,” he said.
