President Donald Trump soared to victory in the South Carolina GOP primary election, as multiple outlets have projected his landslide win on Saturday evening.
According to The New York Times, Trump was projected to win the South Carolina primary after the polls had officially closed for just one minute. With no precincts yet reporting, they reported, “Race called by The Associated Press. The race was called before any votes were reported, which often means the call was based on polls and other data.”
The president dealt a crushing blow to the state’s former Republican Governor Nikki Haley, who trailed significantly behind Trump headed into the primary election. In fact, Trump held a 28-point lead among South Carolina GOP voters, according to a poll from Suffolk University/USA Today.
This week, the president hit the campaign trail hard, crisscrossing the country for multiple speaking events in Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and South Carolina. On Saturday morning, he delivered remarks at the 2024 CPAC event before departing for South Carolina to await the results from the primary election.
Trump’s momentous win in the Palmetto State is his fifth win in the Republican primary season. So far, he has won Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and the delegates from the Virgin Islands. He is expected to sweep to victory unchallenged in all upcoming Super Tuesday GOP primary states on March 5, 2024.
It is unclear if Nikki Haley plans to suspend her campaign on the heels of Trump’s decisive victory in her home state.
