President Trump urges hospitals to better inform patients

President Trump is pushing for price transparency in the U.S. healthcare system. According to The Associated Press, the Trump administration is cracking down on hidden costs and warning hospitals that they could face fines if they do not share basic pricing information with the public.

The Trump administration has reportedly focused on hidden costs as one of the factors that keep healthcare prices artificially high. In addition, the failure to accurately communicate the cost of routine procedures up front results in overcharging patients, either individually or through their insurance plans.

To address the issue, letters have been sent to over 500 hospitals since April, warning them to improve price transparency. In some cases, correspondence from the administration has included a direct request that hospitals disclose their plans to provide price transparency to patients.

The communication from the Trump administration warned of consequences for facilities that fail to comply, including fines of up to $2 million per year. Several right-leaning states, including Texas, Florida, and Alabama, had the highest numbers of noncompliant hospitals. The move from the administration corresponds with President Trump’s ongoing objective to lower healthcare costs through initiatives such as directly negotiated prescription drug prices.

According to an official in the administration, President Trump intends to intensify enforcement of price transparency standards enacted during his first term. In 2019, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at providing patients with better information regarding the price and quality of healthcare.

The order described the issue with “opaque pricing structures,” which benefit special interest groups, hospitals and insurance companies at the expense of the individual patient. The order sought to establish systems to enhance “shoppable” services and enable patients to make informed decisions, thereby increasing competition in the healthcare market.
