Republican candidate for Congress, Mayra Flores, made history on Tuesday after flipping South Texas’s deep blue 34th congressional district, which is 84 percent Hispanic.
The respiratory therapist defeated Democrat frontrunner, Dan Sanchez, and three other opponents to prevail in the special election. The bye-election was initiated to fill the vacant seat after former Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Texas, resigned in March.
Throughout her campaign, Flores was able to land the endorsements of Texas Republicans, Sen. Ted Cruz, and Gov. Greg Abbott. In addition, Flores significantly outraised her challengers, leading her to become the first Republican to represent that part of the Lone Star State since 1870, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Moreover, as if making history in one way is not enough, after immigrating from Mexico as a young child with her parents, Flores is now the first Mexican-born congresswoman in American history.
Combining her childhood story with her experience as the wife of a Border Patrol agent, Flores is focused on solving the border crisis. According to Flores, liberal policies are endangering border towns. However, her approach is simple. “We must secure our borders and keep our families safe,” Flores states in a campaign advertisement.
Following the historic upset, President Trump congratulated Flores and called her the “Big Winner,” in a post on Truth Social. Flores accompanied Trump to the Rio Grande Valley last year to witness the Biden’s unsecured border. In an exclusive interview with RSBN, Flores mentioned “I was very happy that he was here putting the spotlight on South Texas.”
As the midterm elections approach, time will tell if Flores’s triumph is an indication of a red tidal wave that could win Republicans the majority in November.
