Republican Senator Josh Hawley (Mo.) introduced legislation this week that would send rebate checks to taxpaying Americans amid historic tariff revenue pouring into the United States, thanks to President Trump’s policies on trade.

“Americans deserve a tax rebate after four years of Biden policies that have devastated families’ savings and livelihoods,” Hawley said in a statement.

He added, “Like President Trump proposed, my legislation would allow hard-working Americans to benefit from the wealth that Trump’s tariffs are returning to this country.”

Hawley was referring to an idea pitched by Trump last week, in which he suggested offering tax rebates for Americans in light of the stunning revenue pouring into the domestic U.S. from tariffs.

“We have so much money coming in, we’re thinking about a little rebate, but the big thing we want to do is pay down debt – but we’re thinking about a rebate,” Trump told reporters.

According to Fox Business, U.S. tariff revenue has risen to a jaw-dropping $150 billion so far in 2025, with a whopping $28 billion collected in July alone. This staggering intake is the inspiration for Hawley’s bill, which he has called the “American Worker Rebate Act.”

Per the senator’s office, the bill would accomplish the following:

  • Provide a $600 rebate check for each taxpaying adult and dependent child,
  • Provide such a check this year (2025),
  • And allow the rebate amount to increase upon tariff revenue expectations.

“Lo and behold, [Trump’s] tariff plan is working, he’s getting these fantastic trade deals,” Hawley said this week on Bannon’s War Room.

He added, “We ought to give a portion of that back to our working-class, blue-collar voters who powered the Trump revolution, who got this president into office multiple times, and who are the backbone of this nation. Biden has crushed these people! What a legacy for Donald Trump to say, ‘I’m going to take a portion of this massive money…and return it to the people who run this country and are going to build our future.’”
