Sin and misery are sad realities of living in a fallen world. Every soul on earth experiences heartache in their life. How individuals respond to these trials ultimately shapes the outcome in each case.

Affliction confronts the human soul, unlike any other experience in this life. How will you respond when faced with a debilitating illness, persecution, death, or losing a loved one?

Paul offered powerful advice on dealing with hardships, “And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (Romans 5:3-5)

In this passage, Paul does not mention specific examples of physical illness or losing a loved one. He does, however, discuss the fruit of the Spirit as a tool for Christians to triumph over these afflictions by demonstrating patience, hope, and love.

Regardless of the trial, one can only find peace, joy, love, understanding, and comfort through the Lord. Thankfully, the Spirit gives us such heavenly knowledge. Affliction is something that affects even the most influential Christians. It is believed that Martin Luther and Jonathan Edwards both battled with depression.

Torment leads to doubt, and doubt can quickly turn into sin. The Lord tests His sheep, as He did to Job. Knowing we are not part of this world helps articulate the true purpose of life and it further sets our priorities on Him, not ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40).

Peter also referenced trials and suffering, “Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. (1 Peter 4:16)”

While a life of fairy tales is a fantasy, heavenly peace is a reality. How we respond to adversity in our lives builds up our Christian character. Living in the Word of God and prayer can shape the outcome of any trial for Christians.

Finally, we conclude by stressing the importance of experience through tribulations. A battle-tested Christian can face any obstacle through Christ. Spiritual maturity always produces endurance and a reliance on the Lord.

We give thanks to the Lord for loving His creation and granting us the resiliency to face challenges, which undoubtedly brings humility and comfort to our souls.
