President Donald Trump called for common sense cognitive requirements for those seeking to run for the office of president of the United States on Tuesday, keying in on the “qualities and traits” needed for leading the country.
“ANYBODY running for the Office of President of the United States should agree to take a full & complete Mental Competency Test simultaneously (or before!) with the announcement that he or she is running, & likewise, but to a somewhat lesser extent, agree to a test which would prove that you are physically capable of doing the job,” he wrote on Truth Social.
He added, “Being an outstanding President requires great mental acuity & physical stamina. If you don’t have these qualities or traits, it is likely you won’t succeed. MAGA!”
Trump’s comments are somewhat in agreement with GOP presidential candidate and former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, who recently called for mental competency tests for politicians over the age of 75. Per The Hill, Haley commented at a rally in Charleston, South Carolina, “In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire. We’ll have term limits for Congress and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old.”
However, Trump’s comments seem to be calling for a competency exam for all presidential candidates, regardless of age.
President Trump’s advocation for cognitive standards also comes amid Joe Biden’s second year as president, which has seemed to shed light on Biden’s alleged state of cognitive decline amid an ongoing string of gaffes and confusing statements.
“The majority of Americans think Biden is cognitively impaired,” Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, said on Twitter. “He MUST get a cognitive exam with today’s physical exam, and he must release the FULL RESULTS. We need to know!!”
Jackson, who served as the Physician to the President for both President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump, was referring to the recent clean bill of health afforded to Biden after his yearly physical exam.
According to the New York Post, Dr. Kevin O’Connor claimed that Biden “remains a healthy, vigorous, 80-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency, to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief.”
“We learned NOTHING from Biden’s physical exam,” Jackson continued. “How bad is his cognitive issue? Is he on ANY drugs to treat his mental decline? This exam was a JOKE. COVER UP!!”
He also asked why Biden did not receive a cognitive exam. He remarked, “Trump had one, why not him? Biden’s ability to think and reason is GONE! He SHOULD NOT be President!!”
