The Texas House has passed a bill this week that would allow parents to use state funding to pay for alternative education for their children, marking a big win for school choice champions in the Lone Star State.

This is also a big win for President Donald Trump, who championed school choice during his 2024 campaign and has voiced his desire to bring school choice to every state nationwide.

“Congratulations to my friends, Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker Dustin Burrows, along with Texas Legislators, for finally passing SCHOOL CHOICE, which I strongly endorsed – this is a gigantic Victory for students and parents in the Great State of Texas!” the president wrote on Truth Social.

Advocating for school choice is a big component of Trump’s America First agenda in his second term in the White House.

Upon taking office, he signed two executive orders addressing educational freedom and opportunity for American families. This included a directive to the Secretary of Education prompting her to issue guidance on how federal funding could be used to support such alternate school choices, as reported by RSBN.

“We will very soon be sending Education BACK TO ALL THE STATES, where it belongs,” Trump wrote on Thursday.

According to the Texas Tribune, the State House initially approved the school funding bill (SB 2) in an 85-63 vote. The legislation would implement education savings programs to allow parents to use state funding to cover either private or homeschooling tuition. Families eligible for the program could receive up to $10,000 per student, the outlet reported, but the House will need to specifically approve the voucher and send it back to the Senate.

But for President Trump, the House passage of the initial legislation was a big step forward for proponents of school choice.

“It is our goal to bring Education in the United States to the highest level, one that it has never attained before. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he concluded.
