With roughly two weeks to go until the first presidential debate between President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump slammed ABC News for its behavior during an interview with Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark.
In a Sunday Truth Social post, the 45th president wrote, “I watched ABC FAKE NEWS this morning, both lightweight reporter Jonathan Carl’s(K?) ridiculous and biased interview of Tom Cotton (who was fantastic!), and their so-called Panel of Trump Haters, and I ask, why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network? Will panelist Donna Brazil give the questions to the Marxist Candidate like she did for Crooked Hillary Clinton? Will Kamala’s best friend, who heads up ABC, do likewise. Where is Liddle’ George Slopadopolus hanging out now? Will he be involved. They’ve got a lot of questions to answer!!! Why did Harris turn down Fox, NBC, CBS, and even CNN? Stay tuned!!!”
During the interview, Cotton detailed Harris’ plans to get rid of private health insurance but was met with pushback. However, Harris has a well-documented history of supporting Medicare for All, which could effectively end private insurance nationwide.
The Washington Examiner’s Tim Carney reminded users of Harris’ stance in a post on X.
“Harris very clearly sponsored a bill to ban private insurance, raised her hand saying that private insurance be outlawed, and then released a plan saying that all current private insurance plans would be abolished. Where is her clear repudiation of those positions?” he asked.
Following Trump’s post, mainstream media outlets began casting doubt over whether Trump was still planning to go head-to-head with Harris on Sept. 10.
Trump Senior Adviser Jason Miller shared a post on X from National Review editor Phillip Klein, who outlined the chain of events regarding the terms of the debate.
“Under the original debate agreement with Biden, Dems insisted the mics be muted to prevent Trump interrupting. When Trump said new debate agreement would need to be negotiated with Harris, Dems portrayed this as Trump backing out. He then agreed, now they want to change terms,” Klein wrote.
On Monday morning, Trump responded to media questions about this post, sharing that the Harris campaign was trying to back out of the debate.
“They’re trying to get out of it because she doesn’t want to debate. She’s not a good debater. She’s not a smart person. She doesn’t want to debate,” Trump said.
