President Donald Trump, prioritizing America’s security and global influence, confirmed on Sunday that two nuclear submarines he ordered to counter Russia are now strategically positioned “in the region” ahead of U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff’s critical visit to Moscow.
This decisive move underscores the President’s commitment to protecting American interests and ensuring peace through strength in the face of rising global tensions. Speaking to reporters, he addressed questions about the submarines’ deployment to confront Russia’s aggressive rhetoric.
“They are in the region, yeah — where they have to be.”
On Friday, Trump announced on Truth Social that he had directed the submarines to be placed in key locations after a threatening post from a former Russian president.
“Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Witkoff is set to arrive in Russia on Wednesday or Thursday, aligning with Russian state media reports. The visit coincides with Trump’s Friday deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine or face intensified U.S. sanctions and tariffs, including potential secondary tariffs on nations purchasing Russian energy. When asked about Witkoff’s message to Moscow, Trump emphasized America’s demand for peace: “Yeah, get a deal where people stop getting killed.”
Trump also highlighted the devastating toll of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, noting, “A tremendous number of Russian soldiers have been killed. And likewise Ukraine, a lower number, but still thousands and thousands of people. And now we’re adding towns where they’re being hit by missiles. So it’s a lot of people being killed in that ridiculous war.”
He stressed his administration’s track record of preventing conflicts, stating, “We stopped a lot of countries from war, India and Pakistan, we stopped a lot of countries. And we’re going to get that one stopped too. Somehow. We’re going to get that one stopped. That’s a really horrible war.”
Despite Medvedev’s reckless references to Russia’s “Dead Hand” nuclear system, Trump had previously cautioned him to “watch his words,” warning of “dangerous territory.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov downplayed the U.S. deployment, claiming, “American submarines are already on combat duty – that’s a constant process,” and insisted Russia remains committed to nuclear non-proliferation, per The Moscow Times.
