President Donald Trump delivered remarks Thursday at the White House for a special National Day of Prayer event, speaking about the importance of religion and faith in America and reminding the nation of its Providence-based roots.
“We’re bringing religion back in our country and we’re bringing it back quickly and strongly, because for America to be a great nation, we must always be one nation under God,” the president said.
The reverent ceremony was kick-started with a meaningful worship service, featuring songs like “How Great Thy Art,” and “Goodness of God.”
The president emerged in a dark suit and a blue tie, welcoming leaders of many faiths to the White House, including Pastor Paula White, Dr. Ben Carson, Alveda King, and even Dr. Phil McGraw.
“Today, as the American people turn to God in prayer, we continue a tradition older than our independence itself,” President Trump said. “Nearly 250 years ago on June 12, 1775, the Continental Congress appointed a day of fasting and prayer so that Americans fighting for their liberty could seek the help of the Almighty.”
The president looked ahead to the next four years of celebrations in America, ranging from the 250th anniversary of its founding to the Olympic ceremonies and the World Cup, adding, “This is really going to be four years of celebrations, so get ready, and we’re going to bring God with us!”
Trump also spoke about the importance of prayer in terms of the nation’s founding and its ongoing place in American culture.
“Today, more than two and a half centuries later, in the heart of a free and proud America we rejoice that God answered those prayers,” he said. “And I think God answered other prayers because he’s put in an administration to run this country that’s going to make you proud again, that’s going to make you believe and believe more again.”
The president also touched on his historic creation of the White House Faith Office in the West Wing, and said their work has been “amazing to watch and beautiful to watch.”
