President Donald Trump announced his former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador Ron Johnson as his nominee for the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.
Trump’s announcement included details regarding Johnson’s background and education, highlighting his role as a Green Beret in the U.S. Army.
“Ron will work closely with our great Secretary of State Nominee, Marco Rubio, to promote our Nation’s security and prosperity through strong America First Foreign Policies. During my First Term, Ron served as the Ambassador to El Salvador, where he worked tirelessly with Salvadoran authorities and our team to reduce violent crime and illegal migration to the lowest levels in History,” Trump wrote.
“He also served our Country for over twenty years with the Central Intelligence Agency after a distinguished career in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret. He graduated from the National Intelligence University with a Master of Strategic Intelligence,” he continued.
“Congratulations Ron. Together, we will put an end to migrant crime, stop the illegal flow of Fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into our Country and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!” Trump concluded.
The news ends speculation that former Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake could serve in the role.
The New York Post and Semafor first reported the news that Lake, 55, could be selected for the key role as part of Trump’s border crackdown.
“Kari Lake is a leading contender for the nomination as Donald Trump’s ambassador to Mexico, two people familiar with the situation told Semafor,” the outlet reported.
“Lake won Trump’s endorsement in both her unsuccessful bids for statewide office in Arizona. The former news anchor and vocal proponent of stringent border security lost an Arizona Senate bid last month to Democratic Sen.-elect Ruben Gallego,” it added.
Lake has been a controversial figure in the America First movement in recent years. Formerly a news anchor for Phoenix Fox affiliate KSAV-TV, she lost a close battle for governor against Democrat Katie Hobbs, though she refused to concede the race.
She followed the loss with her 2024 run for the Senate. Lake won the primary but lost in the general election despite Trump winning Arizona’s electoral votes.
