President Donald Trump said that the United States is not currently participating in Israel’s strikes against Iran, but that it is still “possible we could get involved.”
“We’re not involved in it,” President Trump said during an exclusive interview with ABC News on Sunday. “It’s possible we could get involved. But we are not at this moment involved.”
He also maintained that “there’s no deadline” at the moment for Iran to negotiate a deal regarding their nuclear program, but that he anticipated one would be coming soon.
“But they are talking. They’d like to make a deal. They’re talking. They continue to talk,” he said. “Something like this had to happen because I think even from both sides, but something like this had to happen,” he explained. “They want to talk, and they will be talking.”
After Sunday’s scheduled negotiations were cancelled following Israel’s initial strikes against Iran, President Trump noted that the attack “may have forced a deal to go quicker, actually.”
He was also “open” to the idea of Russian President Vladimir Putin mediating negotiations between Israel and Iran.
“I would be open to it. [Putin] is ready. He called me about it. We had a long talk about it. We talked about this more than his situation. This is something I believe is going to get resolved,” said the president.
The president further explained that Israel and Iran must “make a deal” and that “Many calls and meetings” regarding the potential negotiations were “now taking place.”
“Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make, in that case by using TRADE with the United States to bring reason, cohesion, and sanity into the talks with two excellent leaders who were able to quickly make a decision and STOP,” he wrote Sunday via a post to Truth Social.
President Trump also touted his prior peace deals between Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia, despite the “very stupid decisions” of the Biden administration, as evidence that he could broker a peace agreement between Israel and Iran.
“There is peace, at least for now, because of my intervention, and it will stay that way,” he added. “Likewise, we will have PEACE, soon, between Israel and Iran! Many calls and meetings now taking place. I do a lot, and never get credit for anything, but that’s OK, the PEOPLE understand. MAKE THE MIDDLE EAST GREAT AGAIN!”
