President Trump has announced that he will hold a fundraiser and rally for Georgia gubernatorial candidate David Perdue.
The former Georgia senator is challenging Gov. Brian Kemp, R-Ga., in May’s GOP primary. The winner of the primary is expected to challenge Democrat Stacey Abrams—who Kemp defeated in 2018— in November’s gubernatorial election.
According to The Hill, “A source familiar with the matter confirmed that Trump will host a fundraiser for Perdue at Mar-a-Lago on March 16. Attendance at the reception will cost $3,000 per person, and a donation of $24,200 will get attendees a photo with Trump and Perdue.”
The source also confirmed that Trump will hold a campaign rally for Perdue in Georgia sometime before the May 24 primary and that other Trump family members will campaign for him as well.
In December, Trump gave Perdue a glowing endorsement.
The 45th president said in a statement, “Great to see that David Perdue is running for Governor of Georgia. He is a Conservative fighter who isn’t afraid of the Radical Left and is the only candidate in Georgia who can beat Stacey ‘The Hoax’ Abrams in November.”
Trump added, “Brian Kemp has failed Georgia. He caved to Stacey Abrams before the 2020 Election and allowed massive Election Fraud to take place. The signing of the Stacey Abrams-backed Consent Decree, so stupidly giving her and the Democrats everything they wanted, was a monumental mistake for not only Georgia but also for our Nation!”
Despite being Republican, Kemp has been called out on multiple occasions by Trump and other GOP members for failing to properly address Georgia election discrepancies that took place during the 2020 presidential election.
The Peach State has become a battleground over the past two election cycles after being dominated by the GOP for decades.
The showdown between Perdue and Kemp will be closely watched given Georgia’s newfound status as a battleground state.
