U.S. men’s national soccer team coach Mauricio Pochettino has high hopes that with President Trump’s support, the country might be able to get into the top tier this year.
In June 2026, the U.S. will host the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup, and it is an opportunity for the home team to perform better than they have before. The last sitting president to attend a World Cup was Bill Clinton in Chicago in 1994, but since President Trump is a big lover of sports and has been seen supporting major sports events, many are expecting him to attend a game at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Breitbart reported that Pochettino said that if President Trump wanted to offer his assistance in making the team great again, he would say yes. Pochettino revealed, “If he asks me, I say yes. President, with your help, with the fans behind hosting the World Cup, all is possible.”
In the past, the U.S. team has had some bad luck at World Cups. According to Fox News, the last time a U.S. team finished in the top tier was in 1930. Since then, the teams have only managed to reach the quarterfinals. But this year, there is hope: President Trump.
Pochettino admits that there is added pressure on the team to perform. Fox News shared what he had to say, “I think the pressure is going to be there, because we are a host. And then it’s a country where the mentality is about winning. You know, in sport, in everything that Americans are involved in, they want to win.”
He also added that he is ready for the pressure, saying, “That is the culture. It’s cultural. Of course, it’s going to be a pressure, but a welcome one. That means that we are going to feel the adrenaline that we need to feel.”
With President Trump’s support, Pochettino has high hopes that next year is finally the year the team will reach the top tier and hopefully create history by winning the big game title as the host country.
