President Donald Trump’s advisers are considering holding a Republican midterm convention in Las Vegas in 2026 as part of a plan to showcase party achievements between presidential election years.
The idea follows the president’s announcement that the GOP will host conventions more frequently rather than waiting until presidential election cycles.
“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024. Time and place to be determined. Stay tuned, it will be quite the Event, and very exciting!” President Trump wrote in a September Truth Social post.
President Trump first floated the idea in August, saying such a gathering has “never been done before” by the Republican Party.
Las Vegas is among the top contenders for hosting the event, according to people familiar with the discussions who spoke to The Wall Street Journal. Other locations under consideration include Texas and Washington, D.C.
While rare for Republicans, Democrats held midterm conventions during the 1970s and 1980s before abandoning the practice, which critics said had become too costly and ineffective, the report noted.
President Trump’s post came shortly after Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin reportedly suggested his own party might revive midterm conventions. Sources told The Wall Street Journal that the Republican gathering would likely coincide with the start of early voting in the 2026 elections, when voters will choose all 435 U.S. House members, 35 senators, 36 governors and other state and local officials.
The president is said to want a lively and entertainment-focused atmosphere similar to the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which featured a performance by Kid Rock and a speech by the late Hulk Hogan, who died in July.
“We’re excited about the possibility of a midterm convention and looking forward to seeing the plans develop,” Republican National Committee spokeswoman Kiersten Pels told Axios. She said the event would “showcase the party’s unity, vision, and commitment to expanding our majorities in 2026.”
