Russian economic negotiator, Kirill Dmitriev, has traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with members of the Trump administration. Dmitriev is the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and the highest level Russian official to visit Washington since the beginning of the Ukraine war.
Although the agenda of Dmitriev has not been disclosed, it has been reported that he will meet with Trump administration Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Witkoff, a close ally of President Trump, has played a significant role thus far in the Trump administration. He has been instrumental in negotiating an end to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The meeting with Dmitriev may be the next step in negotiating an end to the conflict. Dmitriev himself characterized the visit as a way to maintain open communication. He was critical of the Biden administration’s approach to handling the conflict, saying dialogue between the U.S. and Russia had been “completely destroyed,” under Biden.
Dmitriev took a more optimist approach to the upcoming meeting. Posting to Telegram on Thursday, Dmitriev stressed the need for open communication. “Yes, restoring dialogue is a difficult and gradual process. But each meeting, each frank conversation allows us to move forward,” Dmitriev said. “A real understanding of the Russian position opens up new opportunities for constructive cooperation, including in the investment and economic sphere.”
The meeting comes after President Trump shared his frustrations last week regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin and the status of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. However, Trump has also indicated he is open to continued discussion and said his frustration with the Russian leader will “dissipate quickly,” if he does the right thing and follows through on a peace agreement.
