President Donald Trump posted a statement Wednesday morning saying “seniors should not pay taxes” on social security, hinting at what could be included in his plans for the program.

The 45th president took to Truth Social to make one of the first detailed moves on how he will be addressing social security, especially for the elderly within America. Within Trump’s platform already, he has promised to “fight for and protect social security and medicare with no cuts, including no changes to the retirement age.”

The new statement, however, could target another key voting bloc for the Republican presidential nominee in order to win this year’s election.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that people who are 65 and older made up an estimated 25.7 percent of the 2020 voting population. While the older voting group was not the largest in comparison to those 45-64 years old, it did land in second place for the match up between President Joe Biden and Trump, U.S. Census Bureau data shows.

In an April Pew Research poll between Biden, who had been the Democratic presidential candidate at the time, and Trump, 52 percent of voters over 65-years-old stated they would either be for or lean towards Trump, with only 45 percent choosing Biden.
