President Trump has been vocal in his support for former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as he faces prosecution for an alleged coup attempt, which he has described as a ‘witch hunt’ by the current Brazilian regime. The charges against Bolsonaro stem from allegations that he attempted to overturn the 2022 election after being defeated by his left-wing opponent, Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro has denied the charges against him, stating that he has always “played within the rules.” The Brazilian prosecutor released a final report on Monday, accusing Bolsonaro of attempting to lead a criminal organization in a violent coup against the government. Bolsonaro’s defense will now present its case before a panel of Supreme Court justices, who will vote on whether to convict or acquit the former president.
On Thursday, President Trump shared a letter to Bolsonaro expressing his continued support and his opinion that the charges brought against him by the current Brazilian government were politically motivated.
“I have seen the terrible treatment you are receiving at the hands of an unjust system turned against you,” Trump said. “This trial should end immediately!”
Trump encouraged Bolsonaro by pointing out that he maintains a high level of public support.
“I am not surprised to see you leading in the polls,” Trump said. “You were a highly respected and strong leader who served your country well.”
Trump linked the prosecution of Bolsonaro to broader concerns about civil liberties and free speech.
“I share your commitment to listening to the voice of the people and I am very concerned about the attacks on free speech…coming out of the current government,” Trump said.
In addition to publicly expressing his support for Bolsonaro, Trump has shown his disapproval towards the current Brazilian government through the policies of his own administration and has pushed for the case against Bolsonaro to be dropped.
“I have strongly voiced my disapproval both publicly and through our tariff policy,” Trump said. “It is my sincere hope that the government of Brazil changes course, stops attacking political opponents, and ends its ridiculous censorship regime. I will be watching closely.”
