President Donald Trump is only a handful of months into his second term in the White House, but already, people seem to be wondering whether he would consider running for president in 2028, despite constitutional constraints.
“Probably not,” he told CNBC’s Squawk Box. “…I’d like to run. I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had.”
Due to Amendment 22 – ratified in 1951 – no president can serve more than two dutifully elected terms in the United States. This amendment was passed following President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four-term presidency, which sparked support for the idea of term limits for the Executive Branch.
President Trump famously ran three presidential campaigns, ultimately winning reelection in 2024 with a historic victory over Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
And while Trump’s comments on running for president in 2028 are making headlines this week, it’s not the first time he has addressed the topic of a third term. This spring, Trump told NBC’s Meet the Press that he was looking forward to having “four great years,” as reported by RSBN.
However, he tempered that comment by noting that he would turn the presidency over in 2028 to a “great Republican.”
He said that he was “not looking” to run for a third term, while alluding to the constitutional constraints of the 22nd Amendment that prevent it.
Trump explained, “So many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something, that to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do.”
Potential candidates for assuming the office of the presidency include Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Per RSBN, Trump told NBC earlier this year that he believed a high-performing vice president would have an “advantage” over the field.
