Abortions increased in 2025, even in the post-Roe era

Abortions in the United States continued to increase last year, despite the termination of Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court in 2022.

According to the organization, the Society of Family Planning, the number of abortions in the U.S. continued to increase in 2025, with a slightly higher monthly average of abortions in the first six months of 2025 than in 2024.

However, the increase, according to the organization’s data, was “smaller” than in previous years. This could indicate a slight slowdown in abortions, or merely a temporary dip.

There were nearly 600,000 abortions in the United States in just the first six months of 2025, according to SFP’s data (January to June). Since the Supreme Court’s decision to undo Roe v. Wade, there has been an overall increase in abortions nationwide.

In fact, monthly abortions have increased every year from 2022 (79,620 monthly) to 2025 (98,630).

However, the monthly abortion rate in the U.S. only increased by 3,380 between 2024 and 2025, whereas between 2023 and 2024, monthly abortions increased by 7,070.

Currently, only 13 states in the Union have outright banned abortions – states like Idaho and Texas, for example – while a cadre of other states like Nebraska and Utah have gestational limit bans.

Amid fluctuating abortion laws state-by-state, a rising number of abortions are being performed via telehealth, SFP found. 27 percent of U.S. abortions in the first six months of 2025, for example, were provided via telehealth.

Clearly, abortion in the United States is still a contentious issue, and despite some state bans on the procedure, it appears Americans are taking steps to continue to access the procedure.

There has been some federal pushback on abortion, too. The Trump administration last year ended a Biden-era policy that allowed the Department of Veterans Affairs to facilitate abortions or provide abortion counseling, per RSBN.

The president’s State Department also took recent steps aimed at additionally broadening the Reagan-era Mexico City Policy, which effectively cuts foreign aid that is used to fund abortion procedures.
