President Donald Trump’s bid to bring peace between Russia and Ukraine has been a heavy focus of global news coverage for weeks, and amid these efforts, the president remarked this week that he hopes his work toward peace has an eternal impact.
“I just want to end it,” he told Fox News. “…If I can save 7,000 people from week from being killed…I want to try to get to heaven if possible, I’m hearing I’m not doing well. I hear I’m really at the bottom of the totem pole.”
His facetious remark elicited chuckles from Fox hosts, as Trump continued, “But if I can get to heaven, [ending this war] will be one of the reasons.”
The president’s efforts to bring peace to Eastern Europe have been remarkable. Last week, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, marking the beginning of earnest diplomatic negotiations. This was followed up just days later with the president’s meeting with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
Following a successful multilateral event on Monday, Trump announced that he is working to set up a trilateral meeting that will include himself, President Putin, and President Zelensky.
This trilateral meeting, the president said on Monday, will be preceded by a meeting between Putin and Zelensky one-on-one.
“After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself. Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
On Monday, Trump told the press that he wouldn’t say whether failed negotiations between Putin and Zelensky would result in “the end of the road,” highlighting the importance of stopping needless killing overseas.
“The whole world is tired of [the war],” Trump said. “And we’re going to get it ended.”
