Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Cabinet members traveled to Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Thursday to meet with President Donald Trump’s transition team members ahead of potential tariffs.

Canadian representatives included newly appointed Finance Minister Dominic Leblanc and Foreign Minister Melanie Joly.

A statement from AFP reported that the meetings set for Friday will “focus on Canada’s efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration.

“The ministers will brief Trump’s team on Canada’s new $694-million border security plan, which was devised in response to the tariff threat,” it continued. The meeting will also address “the negative impacts that the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods would have on both Canada and the United States.”

Trump previously questioned America’s subsidization of Canada in a Truth Social post.

“No one can answer why we subsidize Canada to the tune of over $100,000,000 a year? Makes no sense! Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” Trump wrote.

As RSBN previously reported, Trump jokingly referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the “Governor” of the “Great State of Canada” on social media following their recent meeting at Mar-a-Lago earlier in December.

Trump posted the comments on his Truth Social account early Tuesday morning after teasing that Canada could become the 51st state during their face-to-face meeting.

“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada. I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!” Trump wrote.

Fox News reported that Trudeau said during his meeting with Trump that tariffs would kill the Canadian economy.

“Trump then suggested to Trudeau that Canada become the 51st state, which caused the prime minister and others to laugh nervously, sources told Fox News,” the outlet reported.

“But he continued, telling Trudeau that prime minister is a better title, though he could still be governor of the 51st state,” it continued.

Trump previously wrote that he plans to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada and China on his first day in office, with a 25 percent tariff against Canada unless a deal was made to secure the border.
