President Donald Trump hosted a special ceremony on Tuesday in the White House Rose Garden, where he honored the life and legacy of Charles James Kirk and bestowed upon him the Presidential Medal of Freedom – the nation’s highest civilian honor.
He was joined by Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who is now serving as the chair and CEO of Turning Point USA in the wake of her late husband’s assassination.
“Today we’re here to honor and remember a fearless warrior for liberty,” President Trump said.
He called Charlie Kirk an “American patriot of the deepest conviction, the finest quality, and the highest caliber.”
The president reflected on Kirk’s shocking and tragic assassination at Utah Valley University just five weeks ago.
“It was a horrible, heinous, demonic act of murder. He was assassinated in the prime of his life for boldly speaking the truth for living his faith, and relentlessly fighting for a better and stronger America,” he said.
The president said it was his privilege to award Kirk, posthumously, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
President Trump also recognized that Tuesday was Charlie Kirk’s birthday. He would have been 32 years old.
“I would not have missed this moment for anything in the world,” the president said.
President Trump also praised Kirk’s wisdom, which he said was far beyond his years.
“He’s an amazing person,” he said.
He highlighted Erika Kirk’s “unbelievable strength” in dealing with such an unimaginable loss. “He was in love with you,” President Trump said. “…Erika, your love and courage has been an inspiration to all of us, and we will always be here for you, and we are always going to be here for your gorgeous and beautiful children.”
President Trump elevated Charlie Kirk’s life’s work as a “visionary and one of the greatest figures of his generation.”
Mrs. Kirk also offered several comments on Tuesday, dabbing at her eyes occasionally with a handkerchief as she celebrated her husband’s legacy and received the Medal of Freedom on his behalf.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for honoring my husband in such a profound and meaningful way,” she said.
She looked to the future of young Americans who will carry Charlie Kirk’s mission to restore and save liberty in the future. “You’re living proof that the mission did not die with him,” she said. “…Charlie always said that the next generation will decide whether freedom endures and because of you I know freedom will endure.”
Mrs. Kirk focused on her late husband’s fight to preserve and protect American freedom.
“He believed that liberty was both a right and a responsibility and he used to say, freedom is the ability to do what is right without fear…he was free from fear. He was free from compromise, free from anything that could enslave his soul,” she stated.
She added, “He was a free man.”
