More than a month after conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was killed while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, lawmakers in both chambers of Congress have approved resolutions to honor him ahead of what would have been his 32nd birthday on Tuesday.
In the Senate, Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) introduced a resolution designating Oct. 14, 2025, as a National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk. Scott called Kirk’s death “a devastating loss.”
“Charlie was a good man – a devout husband, father, and friend,” Scott said in remarks on the Senate floor. “His life was shaped by his faith and the idea that in America, debate and discussion are crucial to the betterment of our country. He believed in God, the American dream, the value of family, and the principles of our great nation.”
The Senate passed the measure by unanimous consent. Because it is a simple resolution, it does not carry the force of law or require a full vote.
In the House, lawmakers introduced separate resolutions to honor Kirk and condemn political violence. Last month, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) confirmed passage of a resolution recognizing “the life and legacy of our friend Charlie Kirk.”
Scott’s resolution “encourages educational institutions, civic organizations, and citizens across the United States to observe [Oct. 14] with appropriate programs, activities, prayers, and ceremonies that promote civic engagement and the principles of faith, liberty, and democracy that Charlie Kirk championed.”
The lawmakers were among tens of thousands who attended a public memorial for Kirk in Glendale, Arizona, in September.
President Donald Trump is also scheduled to host Erika Kirk at the White House on Tuesday as he posthumously presents Charlie Kirk with the Medal of Freedom during a ceremony.
Tyler Robinson, 22, has been charged with aggravated murder in Kirk’s death. Prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty.
Authorities arrested Robinson after he turned himself in at a sheriff’s office in southwest Utah. Prosecutors have since disclosed text messages and DNA evidence they say link Robinson to the killing.
