Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., directed flags of the United States and the state of Florida to be flown at half-staff following the passing of the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.

In a letter to the director of Real Estate Management and Development, Tom Berger, the governor honored the late queen: “Her 70-year reign was the longest of any monarch of the United Kingdom and encompassed over a quarter of this country’s existence. Throughout her time as Queen, she cultivated a friendship with the White House and met more United States presidents than any other head of state.”

“Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered for her devotion to public service, commitment to duty, and her diligence to deepen the alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States of America,” DeSantis wrote.

Shortly after news revealed that the queen was under medical observation and with family traveling to Balmoral, where she resided, the Royal Family announced through their official Twitter account that, “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” RSBN reported.

45th President Donald Trump released a heartfelt statement following her death, reminiscent of her “tremendous legacy of peace and prosperity for Great Britain,” per RSBN.

“Melania and I are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Together with our family and fellow Americans, we send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom during this time of great sorrow and grief. Queen Elizabeth’s historic and remarkable reign left a tremendous legacy of peace and prosperity for Great Britain. Her leadership and enduring diplomacy secured and advanced alliances with the United States and countries…”

Trump continued, “Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty’s generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was—there was nobody like her!…”
