Gov. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., poked fun at California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom’s debate challenge, saying, “I don’t know if they can reliably keep the power on,” referring to the state’s “flex alerts” asking Californians to conserve power to prevent blackouts as the state struggles with a heat wave.

When asked by Fox News’ Sean Hannity if he would agree to a debate with Newsom, DeSantis jested, “I don’t know if they can reliably keep the power on, so you go out there for a debate and what ends up happening, you know, if they can’t keep the lights on?” Florida’s Voice reported.

“My actions speak louder than my words. There’s certain people that would preen and do that, I understand. We get things done in Florida,” DeSantis added.

The Florida governor’s comments arose after Newsom challenged him to a debate, Fox News reported.

“Hey @GovRonDeSantis, clearly you’re struggling, distracted, and busy playing politics with people’s lives. Since you have only one overriding need — attention –let’s take this up & debate. I’ll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Name the time before Election Day,” Newsom tweeted last week.

DeSantis also delivered similar sentiments earlier this month, addressing criticism of the Sunshine State after Newsom released an ad attacking his leadership.

“I hear a lot of people chirping about Florida from California. They’re so worried about Florida,” DeSantis said. “They can’t even keep the power on in California, are you kidding me?”

DeSantis continued, “Someone told me that they will be able, once all the people that want to move to Florida move out of there, then maybe they’ll have adequate power. But I mean it’s just — it’s just ridiculous. And so — you know, we’ve been able to do that. Part of it, though, is just, you know, we stood for people’s rights, we stood for people’s freedoms and — and obviously the state has done very well. We have more people employed in Florida than we did prior to Covid.”
