Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Trump administration’s administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, supported the president’s plan to lower drug prices for Americans in a new interview.
Oz shared the information backing President Trump’s executive order during a Saturday discussion on Newsmax’s “America Right Now.”
“There are a lot of good reasons to have an executive order to address the inherent unfairness of American spending so much more than Europeans,” Oz said.
“We pointed out that there’s about a two to four times increased cost of medications in the United States compared to other competing companies that are similarly wealthy as we are. Does it make sense?” he added.
Oz explained that pharmaceutical companies will continue to profit following the changes if proper planning is put into place.
“If we do this the right way, pharmaceutical companies will continue to remain profitable. We want those workers and those researchers thriving, but we want to make sure the American people don’t overpay for their medications.”
Trump signed an executive order earlier this month that could drive down the costs of many prescription drugs by up to 80 percent.
“For many years the World has wondered why Prescription Drugs and Pharmaceuticals in the United States States of America were SO MUCH HIGHER IN PRICE THAN THEY WERE IN ANY OTHER NATION, SOMETIMES BEING FIVE TO TEN TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE SAME DRUG, MANUFACTURED IN THE EXACT SAME LABORATORY OR PLANT, BY THE SAME COMPANY???” Trump began in a lengthy post on Truth Social about the change.
“It was always difficult to explain and very embarrassing because, in fact, there was no correct or rightful answer. The Pharmaceutical/Drug Companies would say, for years, that it was Research and Development Costs, and that all of these costs were, and would be, for no reason whatsoever, borne by the ‘suckers’ of America, ALONE,” he continued.
Trump noted that politics were a factor in the high prices related to prescription drugs.
“Campaign Contributions can do wonders, but not with me, and not with the Republican Party. We are going to do the right thing, something that the Democrats have fought for many years,” the president wrote.
