Federal Bureau of Investigation agents executed a court-authorized search warrant on Wednesday at the Fulton County elections office near Atlanta, a move authorities said is connected to ongoing probes related to the 2020 presidential election.
The search took place at the county’s main elections facility in Union City, home to the Fulton County Election Hub and Operations Center. An FBI spokesperson confirmed to The Associated Press that agents were “executing a court authorized law enforcement action” but declined to provide additional details, citing the active nature of the investigation.
A law enforcement official familiar with the matter told Reuters the search is tied to investigations involving the 2020 election. Officials have not said what records or materials agents were seeking, nor whether any items were seized.
The FBI’s action comes as federal authorities continue to review election-related issues stemming from the 2020 contest, in which President Donald Trump lost Georgia to then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
President Trump and his allies have repeatedly alleged fraud or irregularities in Georgia’s election results. Multiple state investigations and independent reviews acknowledged some procedural errors but found no evidence of widespread fraud that would have changed the outcome.
Fulton County has been at the center of several disputes over election records and ballot access. Legal battles have included requests and subpoenas seeking 2020 voter data and election materials.
In 2023, then-Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis obtained a sweeping indictment against President Trump and others over alleged efforts to overturn Georgia’s results. The case was later dismissed after courts disqualified Willis’ office because of a conflict of interest.
Authorities emphasized Wednesday that the current search is part of an ongoing investigation and that further information would be released as appropriate.
The effort follows a move by the president’s legal team earlier this month to seek nearly $17 million in damages from Fulton County for legal fees.
