Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer released a resolution Monday recommending that President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, be found in contempt of Congress after refusing to “comply” with a subpoena request last month.

“Resolution recommending that the House of Representatives find Robert Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for refusal to comply with a subpoena duly issued by the Committee on Oversight and Accountability,” the resolution stated.

In early December 2023, Hunter Biden failed to comply with a scheduled deposition requested through a subpoena from both the Oversight and Judiciary committees. The deposition would have required him to give his testimony regarding the impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden and the investigations into the Biden family’s foreign business deals.

Instead, the president’s son briefly appeared outside Capitol Hill and gave a public statement to the press regarding the situation, according to The Hill. He slammed the investigation from House Republicans, calling himself the “target of an unrelenting Trump attack machine,” The Hill reported.

“For six years, I’ve been the target of the unrelenting Trump attack machine shouting. ‘Where’s Hunter?’” Hunter Biden said in a statement. “Well, here’s my answer. I am here.”

“Let me state as clearly as I can: My father was not financially involved in my business — Not as a practicing lawyer. Not as a board member of Burisma, not in my partnership with a Chinese private businessman, not my investment at all nor abroad, and certainly not as an artist,” Biden continued.

Following the incident, House Republicans on the Judiciary Committee and Oversight Committee warned that Hunter Biden would be found in contempt, teasing the release of the resolution over the weekend, according to NBC News.

The resolution called out his “flagrant defiance” of the deposition subpoena, noting how he instead chose to appear “nearby on the Capitol grounds” to read a “prepared statement” to reporters.

“Mr. Biden’s flagrant defiance of the Committees’ deposition subpoenas—while choosing to appear nearby on the Capitol grounds to read a prepared statement on the same matters—is contemptuous, and he must be held accountable for his unlawful actions,” the resolution stated.

“Accordingly, the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability recommends that Congress find Robert Hunter Biden in contempt for his failure to comply with the Committee subpoena issued,” the statement continued.

The Oversight Committee is expected to consider and report the resolution on Jan. 10, according to the committee’s press release.
